Hydrotreating

  • It is a hydrogenation process using catalysts. The cobalt-molybdenum system supported on alumina was found to be an effective catalyst.

  • Reactions occurring in hydrotreatment units are mainly hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation of sulfur and nitrogen compounds.

  • This is one of the major processes for the cleaning of petroleum fractions from impurities such as sulphur, nitrogen, oxy-compounds, chlorocompounds, aromatics, waxes and metals using hydrogen.

  • It also stabilizes the feed by saturating olefinic compounds.

  • Hydrotreating is mainly used prior to catalytic reforming and catalytic cracking to reduce catalyst contamination and improve product yields.
