(a) Batch Reactor (BR)

  • Unsteady-state operation (batch) in a tank reactor.

  • Used to determine reaction kinetics on a laboratory scale.

  • BR is used in the industry when small amounts of material are to be treated.

  • BR needs less supporting equipments.

  • BR is useful to produce seasonal products.

  • Uniform composition and temperature is assumed to prevail in the reactor (no spatial variation of composition and temperature) at any time instant.

  • Material balance can be made over the whole reactor.

  • The rate of reaction varies with respect to reaction time (\(t_R\)).

  • All elements of fluid have the same residence time (\(=t_R\)) in the reactor.

  • Product quality may vary from batch to batch.
