1.10 Experimental Methods to Determine the Kinetics of Homogeneous Reaction

Rate equation is usually determined by using a two step procedure:

  1. The concentration dependency is obtained by carrying out experiments at fixed temperature.

  2. The temperature dependency is accomplished by quantifying rate constants at different temperatures.

Equipment:

  • Batch reactor - used to obtain homogeneous kinetic data.

  • Flow reactor - used to study kinetics of heterogeneous reactions.

Ways to Follow the Progress of a Reaction:

  • Change in concentration of a given component.

  • Change in total pressure of a constant volume system.

  • Change in volume of a constant pressure system.

  • Change in some physical property of fluid such as electrical conductivity or refractive index.
